Memo to TransLink: No New Taxes - Gas, Auto, Or Property

Author: Mark Milke 2000/07/18

VICTORIA: The BC division of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today slammed TransLink for continuing to press for new taxes in Greater Vancouver, including reports of a possible five cent a litre tax hike at the pump.

"Taxpayers should not be punching bags for George Puil. TransLink let the Province transfer road responsibilities to the GVRD without demanding commensurate funding. Now taxpayers are being asked to pay for that mistake," said Milke. "Instead of pillaging taxpayers once again with either new gas taxes or a $75 auto tax, Mr. Puil and Company should find the money in existing fuel and property taxes."

Milke pointed out that gas tax rates have risen steadily over the past several decades.

"GVRD residents pay some of the highest provincial gas taxes in the country," said Milke. "In addition to federal taxes, GVRD residents pay 15 cents a litre in provincial and TransLink gas taxes, including a 4 cent a litre surcharge. Only Quebec and Newfoundland motorists pay more in provincial fuel taxes when compared with GVRD."
